James “Fittest Man” Greenaway Wins Montserrat 5K Race

 BRADES – Seasoned runner James “Fittest Man” Greenaway won the first major road race in Montserrat for 2010.

James won the mountainous 5K race from St Peters to Little Bay easily in a time of 20 minutes and 39 seconds. He was followed by up and coming local long distance runner Delroy Allen in a time of 21 minutes and 6 seconds, with Jason Lyn coming in third in 22 minutes and 22 seconds.

In the women’s category Gresel Payano finished first in 33 minutes and 26 seconds, followed by Caroline Murrel in second place and Vanessa Willock in third place. A lone junior runner Jemuel Caby, also completed the course.

The first and second placed finishers in the male and female categories all received cash prizes donated by local businessman Bruce Farara. The 5K race was organised by the Montserrat Running Club, the Fittest Man Running Club and the Sports Department.

The race served as a warm up for the upcoming Freedom Run race on St Patrick’s Day on March 17th, 2010. It is also part of a series of road races that are planned in Montserrat for 2010, which will culminate in the 2nd Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon on Saturday November 27th.
