Electrical Storm Halts Montserrat's first Spelling Bee

BRADES, Montserrat  – The Sunrise Productions first ever Spelling Bee was barely into the first round on Sunday 18th when an electrical storm moved in knocking out electricity at the Montserrat Cultural Center and causing a halt to the long awaited activities. Thirteen anxious youth between the ages of ten and twelve were on stage, all geared up to demonstrate their prowess and take home the prize.

Organisers along with spellers, parents, supporters and community members waited anxiously in the growing darkness for the resumption of the activities, but eventually were forced to cancel the evening’s proceedings. At stake is $3000 and the chance to get their name on the large trophy (which will be on display at the school of the winner) and cash prizes along with a certificate of participation.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Lonie Howe, member of Sunrise Productions, announced that “It is anticipated that the winners of future shows will be given the opportunity to represent Montserrat on the regional stage at the Seven Seas Regional Competition held in Antigua annually.”

The competition has been rescheduled to next Sunday September 26th at 5pm.
