As part of its continued capacity building efforts, the Montserrat Arts Council will host a Stilt Walking workshop late February. Alan Vaughan will be the facilitator of the workshop.
Mr. Vaughan is working with the Director of the Montserrat Arts Council, Mr. Chadd Cumberbatch, on a British Council funded project entitled “The Isle Is Full Of Noises”. His visit is part of the project where he will collaborate with Mr. Cumberbatch to develop a series of performances drawing from the themes of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. He has agreed at the behest of the Montserrat Arts Council, to conduct a Stilt Walking workshop during his visit.
Alan Vaughan is a British multi-media artist and cultural and social activist. For the past four (4) years, he has been working as a designer with Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers) in Trinidad. Among his many accolades, he is currently the costume designer for “Ah Hard Rain”, an independent film and the costume designer for TouchDSky Moko Jumbies (Trinidad). His most noted accomplishment was winning the 2015 Trinidad Carnival Queen competition with his costume entitled: “The Sweet Waters of Africa”.
This was also the first Moko Jumbie to ever win the Queen of Carnival costume competition.
Mr. Cumberbatch, stated “While I am pleased that of all the creative people in the Caribbean, Alan has chosen me to work with on this project, I am even more excited about the possibilities of what Montserrat could gain from the stilt walking workshops. I think it is important that we expose our people to as many art forms and expressions as possible and every opportunity to do so should be explored.”
