DMCA to Host Disaster Risk Reduction Expo

The Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) will host a DISASTER RISK REDUCTION EXPO on Friday October 13th, 2017, from 10 am to 3:00 pm at its compound on Yellow Hill Road.

The event will be held to mark “International Day for Disaster Reduction” observed annually on October 13th.

The theme for this year’s observance is “Home Safe Home”.

The aim of the DMCA’S Disaster Risk Reduction Expo is to raise awareness amongst residents of how communities, Government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on Montserrat are taking action to reduce the island’s risk to disasters.

The Expo which promises to be an educational and fun-filled event for the whole family will showcase how traditional practices and local knowledge complements modern science to assist in building the island’s resilience to natural and manmade disasters.

This event will showcase equipment and technology used in disaster management mitigation, prevention, planning, preparedness, response and recovery from natural and man-made hazards.

The exhibitors that will be present at the EXPO are the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA), the Ministry of Communication and Works, Government Information System (GIS), the Montserrat Fire and Rescue Service, the Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS), the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) and the Montserrat Branch of the British Red Cross.

In December 2009, the United Nation General Assembly decided to designate October 13 as the date to commemorate the Day International Day for Disaster Reduction.
