The Caribbean Football Union is reporting that three Montserratians are included in a list of 24 student athletes receiving the nod from Hartpury College and University coaches Christopher Knowles and Marc Richards and Kettering Town FC Coach Steven Kinninburg following a November 25-28, 2019 ID Combine in St. John’s, Antigua.

According to the CFU website, “six players from the Emerald Isle journeyed to Antigua for the four-day event, which attracted male and a smattering of female footballers amounting to around 125.”

The players from Montserrat were Ahijah Daley, Siegel Rodney, Herbert Morrison, Sydney Mendes, Mark Rogers and Javaughn Fenton. All are a part of the Montserrat Football Association elite teams and regular make the national teams for Under15, U19 and several have been selected as part of the senior men’s team.

Between both institutions, the Hartpury coaches identified 17 players whom they believe could have futures with them, and Kettering Town listed 13. Six players appear on both lists, which also includes a sole female.

Generation Next FC President Richard Santos, who launched the initiative in conjunction with the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association, asked that the names of the selected players not be disclosed to allow the time and process to determine if they meet the academic requirements. Once this verification period is done, the institutions will make official scholarship offers, followed by a public announcement.

While the initiative originated in the twin-island state, the principals invited the football associations of neighboring islands to, at their own costs, send eligible players to participate.

The organizers scheduled a second phase of the combine for January. Coaches from William Penn University in Iowa, Holy Cross Notre Dame College in Indiana and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas will put student-athletes through their paces.
