Montserrat’s theatrical scene got a boost on the weekend with One Night Three Plays.
The Silk Cotton Theatre Company presented two nights of performances in collaboration with the Montserrat Arts Council.
On Saturday, October 29, a gala evening was held at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. The Arts Council said the attendance to the $100 event exceeded their initial expectations. They acknowledged the support of the Rotary Club who encouraged many of their members to attend.
The first play was The Impossible Situation by Cicely Waite-Smith. Performed by Mrs Marjorie Smith, Ms Noreen Brade and Kenneth ‘Rabo’ Silcott, it told the story of a nouveau rich couple who accuses their maid of stealing. It looks at the divide between the haves and the have nots.
Poof by Lynn Nottage was performed by Mrs Lorraine Lewis and Mrs Beth Breuer. Both women are in unhappy marriages and Lewis’ character believes her anger and pain finally got the better of her and she’d made her abusive husband disappear with magic.
The final play, Mamaguy by Freddie Kissoon was full of comedy as the youngest members of the cast tried to run a hustle.
Set in Trinidad where the word derives, Theodore Phillip who plays Lennox is out of work and in need of cash. After hearing that his Uncle Gavin played by Calvin Lewis is going to be on island and coming to visit him, he enlists he help of his sister and best friend to trick him into giving him more cash.
In the end it is clear that the uncle was smarter than he looked. Other members of the cast are Darion Darroux, Sharese Allen and Jamilia Greenaway.
The play also ran on Sunday evening to an energetic audience.
