BRADES, Montserrat – A National Anti-Doping Committee is to be formed here says Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Jermaine Wade.
Wade was speaking upon his return from last weekend’s 7th meeting of the Board of the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (Caribbean RADO) in Paramaribo, Suriname. The official was accompanied by General Counsel Kenroy Hyman from the Attorney General’s Chambers and Physician Dr. Ingrid Buffonge.
The delegation joined representatives from RADO which includes Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Guyana, Suriname, Turks & Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia and St Vincent.
All 14 member states attended the two-day meeting to solidify the regional thrust in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and signed on to its Code.
Two related seminars were also held on Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) and Results Management (RM), which were facilitated by officials from WADA and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
Dr. Buffonge attended the TUE sessions with other medical doctors in order to gain a better understanding of the process of granting permission to athletes to use medications for medical reasons as stipulated under WADA’s guidelines.
Hyman attended the RM seminar for lawyers who are expected to convene committees to deal with adverse analytical findings found in doping control samples and oversee the appeals process.
The Parliamentary Secretary said every effort will be made to bring Montserrat in line with the standards of international anti-doping agencies. Wade hopes that Montserrat will be able to team up with Antigua & Barbuda to utilize resources more efficiently as the island presently does not have the capacity to take the necessary measures without support.
