2016 Tourism Figures Show Growth

The 2016 tourism figures for Montserrat released this week by Statistics Montserrat show continued growth for the island year on year.

In 2006, Montserrat reported 7991* visitors which increased in 2016 to 13,555. Air passengers accounted for 6506 visitors with another 7049 coming by sea.

March 2016 saw the highest month of visitors in 2016 with 3052. December was second with 2098. February brought 2052 visitors with the lowest number of arrivals in May at 439.

8734 of the visitors to the island last year were tourists. With 1790 coming in March and another 1490 in December. Excursionists accounted for 1225 of the visitors and 3596 were cruise passengers.

Nationals of the United States comprised 2436 of the tourists with 2359 from the United Kingdom and 2046 from the OECS.

The majority of daytrippers/excursionists were from the OECS (460), followed by the USA (236) and the UK (232).

Men and women aged 50 to 64 continue to be the primary demographic for visitors. 2494 of them visited in 2016 and 1540 aged 40 to 49. 1413 visitors were in the age range of 30 to 39.

Most visitors and tourists stayed in private homes (5636). 682 stayed in hotels and 1606 in guest houses.
