The Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, Housing & The Environment, Claude Hogan will be discussing the status of Montserrat’s environment at the ‘Inter-Island Environment Meeting (IIEM), and will deliver a presentation at the ‘Wilder Islands Conference,’ in Alderney, UK.
The Inter-Island Environment Meeting will be held on September 26 and 27, under the theme “Wilder Islands’. The meeting is aimed at enabling Government bodies, Non-Governmental Organisation’s (NGO’s), environmental managers and individuals to discuss the status of the islands’ environments. The meeting will be conducted as a combination of presentations, debates and field visits. The topics on the IIEM agenda include ‘Biological Records and Citizen Science’; ‘Partnerships for Nature’s Recovery’; ‘Sustainable Fisheries’ and ‘Biodiversity Issues’; among others.
The IIEM will be followed by the ‘Wilder Islands Conference’ on September 28 where Minister Hogan has been invited to deliver an inspirational presentation on the topic, ‘What roles should NGOs and government play in the response to climate change and biodiversity loss across our islands?’
The ‘Wilder Islands Conference’ will be a day of talks by inspirational speakers who have detailed knowledge of the importance of island biodiversity and the threats they face. The day will be hosted by renowned entomologist, Dr. George McGavin, and each session will involve a series of short presentations; with an emphasis on how islands can secure their environment against a trend of global decline, and the very important role that islands play in retaining biodiversity on a national and global scale.
During Minister Hogan’s absence, the Minister Paul Lewis will oversee the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, Housing and The Environment.
