Franklyn ‘Algie’ Greaves Launches ‘Strat Talk’ on ZJB Radio

Former ZJB broadcaster Franklyn ‘Algie’ Greaves is launching Strat Talk, a new cultural affairs programme, on ZJB Radio Montserrat on Saturday, August 22.

The show will air every Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., featuring guests with expertise in Montserrat’s culture, heritage and development.

Two preview editions aired earlier this month and were rebroadcast by ZJB following a positive response from Montserratians at home and overseas. The programmes have also been made available for playback through Montserrat Radio Echo.

“The aim of the programme is to create awareness, stimulate discussion, and reminisce on Montserrat’s cultural and economic landscape in an effort to navigate pathways for its development,” said Greaves, who developed, produces and hosts the show.

Greaves is a former calypsonian who now specialises in procurement and financial management in the United Kingdom.

He said the programme is intended to provide a non-political forum for discussions about cultural and development issues while helping Montserratians remain connected to the island.

“The programme is non-political, with an objective to provide a discussion forum for pertinent cultural and development issues and to create a forum where Montserratians can reminisce on their cultural past and feel intrinsically involved with the island, and showcase Montserrat to the world,” Greaves said.

He credited ZJB Station Manager Herman Sargeant with providing the opportunity to add the programme to the station’s weekend schedule. Greaves said Saturday afternoons are traditionally a time when residents and members of the diaspora want to hear conversations and music centred on Montserratian life and identity.

Montserratian music producer and arranger Eddie Prynze Duberry-Allen is scheduled to appear on the launch programme to discuss his new scholarly commentary, Culture is Currency.

The commentary examines the revenue and wider economic potential of the Caribbean music industry and calls on artistes, promoters, cultural organisations and regional governments to approach the sector more strategically.

Duberry-Allen, who appeared on both preview editions of Strat Talk, will be joined by a panel of Montserratian cultural practitioners and ambassadors.

The guests include multiple-crowned calypso monarch and masquerade drumming tutor Keithroy ‘De Bear/DeVoice’ Morson, Montserrat Arts Council Chairman George Austin Howe and poet Myrle Roach.

A social media page for Strat Talk is also being developed.
