The new EC$20, EC$50 and EC$100 polymer banknotes are now available in Montserrat.
According to a release from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), the banknotes, which are made from a thin, flexible and transparent plastic film are available at the following financial institutions: The Bank of Montserrat Ltd., RBC, Royal Bank of Canada and the St Patrick’s Co-Operative Credit Union Ltd.
The EC polymer notes are cleaner as they are more resistant to dirt and moisture. The notes are more secure as they are more difficult to counterfeit because polymer allows for the inclusion of advanced security features. The notes are also stronger because polymer is much more durable than paper and is difficult to tear.
The advanced security features on the EC polymer notes include: the unique tactile feature (raised bumps) specifically for blind and visually impaired individuals and the holographic foil strip which is on the $20, $50 and $100.
The other major features of the EC polymer notes are the portrait orientation, modernised images and landmarks and the signature of the current Governor, Timothy N. J. Antoine.
The EC$50 depicts the image of the former Governor of the ECCB, the late Sir K Dwight Venner, on the back of the note.
The current EC$20, EC$50 and EC$100 paper notes will continue to be in circulation along with the polymer notes. Therefore, in conducting your business, you may receive both polymer and paper banknotes.
