BRADES, Montserrat – Representatives of NAGICO, the regional insurance agency on Thursday presented pencil cases and coloring books to all of the students in the play schools and primary schools.
The head of the Samuel Community Academy was presented on Thursday morning with a cheque for EC$3000 to assist them in the expansion of the school. Ms. Rosmond Meade said the school had relocated to the new location in Brades in time for the new school year; however the space is still small. The Government of Montserrat has donated a building which is presently on the hospital compound to the school, but it will take EC$ 60,000 to move it to the location says Ms. Meade.
On hand to make the presentation of the money, pencil cases and coloring books was Regional Marketing Officer for NAGICO Jimmy Challenger. He said that this year NAGICO is introducing the coloring book, which teaches children about insurance. Challenger explained that NAGICO decided to launch the new product in the smallest island in their 13-island network of insurance companies and agents, Montserrat.
Judith Greer, Country sales agent for NAGICO said she was pleased to have been able to facilitate the delivery of the school products and also the donation to the school. She hoped that this would encourage other companies on island to support the growing school.
Dr. Sheron Burns, Head of the Early Childhood Department in the Ministry of Education thanked NAGICO for the contribution to the local schools. She noted that the language in the coloring book may be above the level of some children but it was a perfect opportunity for parents to read with them.
Samuel Community Academy began as a homeschool in 2004 with two students. In 2005, they became an established school which has grown steadily. This year, there are 14 students enrolled in classes up to grade 6. The school previously operated from Salem but felt it was necessary to have a location further to the north to avoid disruption of classes because of volcanic activity.
