BRADES, Montserrat – Ms. Patricia “Patsy” Farrell of Montserrat is this year’s second place winner in the 2010 Caribbean Nutrition Promotion Competition organized by the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI). The competition looks at how individuals or groups work to improve food and nutrition for special target groups, communities or the general population in the region.
The entry submitted was entitled Men Baking Workshops 1 & 2. Forty men ranging in age from 16 to over 60 years participated in a six-week training session over a two-year period.
Ms. Farrell who served as President and Training coordinator of the First Choice Baking Group was instrumental in organizing and facilitating several workshops for the community. Farrell said she was very proud of her accomplishment and of the group who participated in this training and made the award possible.
She extended special thanks to the Governor’s Office, Office of the Chief Minister, Development Unit, Basic Needs Trust Fund, Ministry of Agriculture, Community Services Department and the private sector for providing the financial and other resources necessary to make these projects a success. She also thanked the facilitators, participants and members of the First Choice Baking Group, also to her family and friends for their support over the years.
This year’s CFNI competition was launched in May throughout the Caribbean and provided an opportunity for individuals/groups and organizations to highlight activities and programs undertaken over the past five years.
The objectives of the competition were to provide visibility to exemplary projects or activities aimed at improving food and nutrition and to promote the sharing of information on efforts to improve food and nutrition in the Caribbean
The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Trinidad on November 16, 2010. Ms. Farrell will receive a trophy, a plaque and a cash prize. Other winners in this year’s competition are: First place – Dominica with a project entitled Eat Fish Day, while third place went to two countries, Trinidad & Tobago with a project entitled ‘Nutrition Music Video’ and Belize with a project entitled ‘Friend Program’. Special Awards were won by Trinidad and Tobago with ‘SWRHA’s Weigh-to-go Healthy Lifestyle Challenge 2009’ and Grenada, with the ‘Grenada Food & Nutrition Council 30th Anniversary Celebrations.’
Montserrat won the first prize in the competition in 2009 for its Minister’s Healthy Lifestyle Challenge.
