BRADES – The world famous Indian-based dance troupe, the Charkula Arts Academy, will be performing at the Montserrat Cultural Centre on Tuesday March 16th at 8pm as part of 2010 St Patrick’s Week celebrations.
Led by Murani Lal Sharma, the troupe has performed traditional Charkula and other Indian folk dances in India and abroad, including performances before former US presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush.
The dance troupe has been performing to packed audiences in Trinidad, including Holi celebrations at the Gandhi Institute. The ten (10) person group is now leaving on a Caribbean tour which will take them to Surinam, Barbados, Grenada and then Montserrat on March 16th, 2010.
One of the items being performed is “Barsane Ki Lathamar Holi”, in which the women hit the men hard with seven feet bamboo staffs, while the men tried to shield themselves. Another feature is the “Mayur Raas” dance which focuses on the love between Lord Krishna and Radha.
The troupe’s performance in Montserrat is as a result of a visit to Montserrat last year by the Trinidad-based Indian High Commissioner Malay Mishra. The Indian High Commission in Trinidad, Government of Montserrat and the Indian Community in Montserrat are the sponsors of the troupe.
