Twelve Year Old Student Wins $3000 in Sunrise Productions’ Spelling Bee

Winner of the first Sunrise Production Spelling Bee, Habibata Kassim, holds her cheque for EC$ 3000 with 2009 Miss Teen Monique Mighty. The competition was held on Sunday, September 26 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre.

LITTLE BAY Montserrat – Twelve Year Old Habibata Kassim emerged winner  in the Sunrise Productions first Spelling Bee Competition held at the Montserrat Cultural Center on Sunday September 26th.

Habibata, a student at the Montserrat Secondary School, and a former student of the St. August Primary  School won EC$3000 and earning the right on have her name inscribed on the huge Winner’s Trophy which will be on display in her school, for the next year.

Second Place Winner was Chekube Okereke who took home $750 and in third place was Claribel Figueroa who won $250. Both also won a trophy. All other contestants won $50. Each speller was given a certificate of participation.

The competition was keenly contested by the thirteen spellers and attracted a large and appreciative crowd of parents, guardians, other family members, well wishers, officials of the Ministry of Education and fellow students. Eight of the students who took part in the competition were either present or former students at the St. August Primary School.

The competition which catered for students between the ages of 10 and 12 is attracting quite a lot of attention and already children are anticipating next year’s competition and the chance to win the prize money.
