While we can bemoan the current state of affairs on Montserrat, we choose today to celebrate the young men and women who are daring to make their own future and have launched businesses over the past year.

Nanny’s Cafe

Jenzil Skerritt recognised that in this economy having more than one stream of income was important to building wealth. He is already the head of Skerritt’s Property Management and Valuation Services and last year opened Nanny’s Cafe with his girlfriend and the head chef Venice Jones.

The couple converted the popular after hour bar known as The Lyme into a restaurant offering lunch and dinner and catering to special occasions. Over the coming months they plan to launch more specialty evenings to add to the very popular Karaoke night on Wednesdays.

RX Gym is owned by Ryan Darroux & Xavier Farrell and located in The Lyme complex in Brades.

The guys decided to turn their backyard gym and passion for health and fitness into a full service facility after increased requests to work out with them.

RX Gym offers cardio, strength and abdominal training. They also support weight loss and nutrition programmes and offer special membership deals.

Check them out on Facebook at RX Gym.

We’ve seen people on Facebook weeping over the tastiness of the Tea Rings and we can never manage to show up in time to get their donuts which are always in high demand.

Since opening Triple Js in July, this husband and wife team have been busier than ever. They took a leap of faith and moved their burgeoning specialty cake business into Brades, not far from the new gym. I guess you can decide whether you want to work out before or after you indulge in their very wicked chocolate cake or those pastries that you can never eat just one of.

Send them a message on Facebook for special orders or walk in to their store at The Lyme Complex.

After being one of the cafe’s best customers since it opened in 2014, Gerren Gerrald jumped at the chance to buy it when the owners decided to sell this year.

Despite a bit of nervousness at being a first time business owner, she pulled on the support of her brother Geffen who is her partner as well as her parents who already ran the popular weekend spot Jaxxxonz.

Since taking over, she’s added her own special flavours to the popular recipes and the family’s famous goat water makes an appearance on Fridays along with her legendary cheesecake. The passion fruit version is delish.

Check them out for breakfast and lunch weekdays and Saturdays.

Do you know other businesses launched since 2015? We want to feature them here.
