The team of consultants reviewing Montserrat’s draft Building Code will present their recommendations for the Implementation of the Revised OECS Building Code 2015 on Wednesday November 22nd , 2017.
The review of the Code is part of an ongoing initiative under the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) iLand Resilience – The Commission’s Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) project funded by the European Union (EU).
The project is intended to strengthen the administrative approach to Building Code implementation and enforcement in the OECS sub-region.
The national consultation, to be convened at the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) Media Centre at 9:00am, will among other activities, consider the “best practice” recommendations and the draft action plan in preparation for the application of the revised OECS Building Code in Montserrat.
The meeting will engage local experts, both in the Government and Private Sector, enabling them to examine the proposed recommendations and give their input as required.
Jerome Meade, the OECS GCCA Project Focal Point on Montserrat has welcomed the country consultation stating that “this stage of the process brings the code one step closer to obtaining the approval of Cabinet, and subsequent enforcement.”
The initiative to date has been a highly participatory process across the OECS member states involving the engagement of stakeholders on discussions surrounding code compliance, legislation and best practices.
The intervention by the OECS is fundamental to the adoption and implementation of Montserrat’s Building Code, which has been in a draft stage for 25 years.
To date, country consultations have taken place in St. Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla. Meetings are scheduled for Saint Lucia on November 24th , St. Vincent on November 28th , Grenada on November 30th , Dominica on December 4th and December 6th in the Virgin Islands.
