Montserrat, along with the rest of the world celebrated GIS Day on Wednesday, November 15.

To commemorate the day, the GIS Unit, a Department within the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, Housing and the Environment, hosted a day of events, which included presentations by the department head Lavern Ryan, Gareth Stanley of Environmental Health and Nicole Duberry from the Lands and Survey Department.

A hands-on demonstration was conducted by Samuel Pike of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) on how the environment systems work.

Students from the Montserrat Secondary School, Lighthouse Academy and Aunt Madge’s Daycare, were in attendance.

Honourable Minister of Agriculture David Osborne gave opening remarks, right after Pastor Sherwin A. E. White administered the opening prayers. The objectives for the day were to increase the spatial awareness and literacy in Montserrat, to celebrate Geography Information System Technology and to support and inspire the youth in Montserrat, through the showcasing of professional women on island.

November 15th is internationally observed as GIS Day, as a means of demonstrating real-world applications that are making a difference in all societies. Since 1999, November 15, has been marked as a day for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS.

At the end of the program at the Montserrat Cultural Centre, tokens were distributed to the attendees.
