Montserrat Delegation Attends Children’s Summit on the Rights of the Child

A small delegation attended a National Children’s Summit and a Child Rights Fair in Basseterre, St Kitts from 23-24 July 2019. The group which included; Keyola Greene CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Keturah Daley, Trevor Howe Jr, Allen Mullings and Lyston Skerritt, Director of Community, Youth and Sports Services represented Montserrat at the UNICEF sponsored event.
The activities were in recognition of that St Kitts and Nevis’ ratification of the Convention in the Rights on 24 July 1990, becoming the first Caribbean country to ratify the treaty.
The Summit for Children was a high-level meeting involving young people, senior members of government and other influential people and specialists, such as business or faith-based leaders, who had face-to-face discussion on some of the key issues impacting children and young people.
The idea of the summit was to gather people together who can share ideas, expertise and collaborate on how to move forward on issues affecting young people. The summit produced some decisions and agreements on key issues and there should be some kind of ‘action’ that results.
The UK signed the convention on 19th April 1990 and by extension Montserrat.
