Four Montserratiants Receive 2019 Chevening Scholars

The Governor’s Office is pleased to announce that Mr Charles Thompson, Ms Cherise Aymer, Ms Sonja Smith and Ms Marissa Allen have been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship for the 2019/20 academic year.

Mr Thompson of the Royal Montserrat Police Service will be studying for a MSc in Criminal Investigation at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.

Ms Aymer of the Montserrat Tourist Board will be completing a MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management at Bournemouth University, Bournemouth.
Ms Smith who is Head Librarian at the Montserrat Public Library will be completing a MSc in Digital Curation at Aberystwyth University, Wales.

Ms Allen who works in the Ministry of Communications, Works, Energy and Labour will be completing a MSc in Applied Geoscience (Geoenergy) at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

This is the first time Montserrat has awarded four scholars at once. His Excellency the Governor, Andrew Pearce said: “This is a proud moment for Montserrat as four of our finest and brightest get ready to leave to further their education and their careers for the betterment of the island. I’d like to offer warm congratulations to Deputy Commissioner Thompson, Ms Smith, Ms Aymer and Ms Allen on their hard work and being awarded the Chevening Scholarship this year. As Montserrat is on the cusp of exciting change in the next few years, this opportunity to study is extremely fortuitous. Good luck and congrats once again!”

The Chevening Scholarship scheme is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. They are geared to students with at least first degrees enabling them to study for Masters programmes or equivalent and who show the potential to become future leaders and decision makers in their home countries.

Applications for Chevening Scholarships for the 2020/21 cycle are now open and will close on November 5th 2019.
