The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) is deeply concerned about recent attempts to infringe upon the constitutional rights of Montserrat’s civil servants, particularly their right to freedom of expression. PDM unequivocally supports the rights of all residents, including civil servants, to speak freely and express their views without fear of repercussion.
“This right is firmly protected by the Constitution of Montserrat and must not be suppressed,” stated the PDM.
Speaking on the PDM Hour Programme on ZJB Radio on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, PDM Leader, Hon Paul Lewis, further shared PDM’s position.
Hon Lewis stated, “The Constitution of Montserrat provides protection for residents to express their views freely and openly, once they are doing so responsibly.” He went on to state, “The rules of the workplace must be respected but outside of the work environment, any authority wanting to restrict the rights of the people is going down a wrong path.”
These views were further echoed by PDM Candidate, Mr. Alric Jared Lynch. Mr Lynch has taken a strong stance as a "Watchman" for the protection of the rights of the people of Montserrat. He has highlighted ongoing efforts by certain authorities to impose restrictions on the voices of civil servants, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Mr. Lynch emphasizes, like Hon Lewis, that while the rules of the workplace should be respected, outside of their professional duties, Montserrat’s residents—including government workers—are entitled to
express their political opinions and support any party they choose, without fear of censorship or retaliation.
Mr. Lynch has reiterated that under a new PDM government, these oppressive practices of silencing workers will be brought to an end.
“Civil servants will no longer face the unjust pressure of having their constitutional rights stripped away,” says Mr Lynch.
PDM is committed to fostering an environment where all Montserratians can engage in free speech and express their political views openly and without fear.
PDM stands firmly in defense of the fundamental freedoms enshrined in Montserrat’s Constitution and vows to protect the rights of all citizens from authoritarian practices. The party is committed to creating a future where democracy and individual freedoms are preserved, respected, and upheld by all.
