Fisherman and chef Carlton O’Garro won the first lionfish chef’s competition on Sunday as part of the start of Agriculture Week 2015.
O’Garro beat out four other chefs to claim the $800 cash prize and title with his Mango Salsa Lionfish, Party Popcorn Lionfish with Sorrel Dip and Pan Fried Lionfish.
Tied for second place were Nicole Duberry and Tina of Tina’s Restaurant each taking home $400 in cash.
Duberry’s menu included a Lionfish kebab, Lionfish stuffed peppers and a sweet potato Lionfish cakes.
Tina created Lionfish Sushi, Blackened Lionfish served with baked pumpkin and fresh green beans. She added a Broiled Lionfish with garlic butter served with red sauteed potatoes and asparagus tips.
Judging the competition were Rose Willock, Amanda Osborne and Genevieve Taylor. Osborne told the audience that they were impressed with the ingenuity and varied ways in which the fish was prepared using as many local ingredients as possible.
Prizes were sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, Housing and the Environment and the Waitt Institute.
The event was part of the first day of activities for Agriculture Week 2015.
