Montserrat to Compete in CFU Under 14 Football Tournament

MFA Under 14 squad to CFU competition.

The Montserrat Football Association (MFA) has released the names of its squad of 18 players, who will be competing in the Caribbean Football Union (CFA) Boys under 14 Tournament in St. Kitts.

After intensive weeks of training, the final list of players are as follows:
Tyrant Thomas- Tuitt, Guerwin Barzey, Ja’Vonte Liburd, Jaylon Ryan- Aymer, Julien Romeo, Kemar Carty, Marcus Walters Jr.,
Shawn Greenaway, De’kwon Lee, Jermahri Meade, Vashim Roache, Johson Cabey, Jovorne Oliver, Quebert Williams, D’Vaughny Browne, Kymani Nelson, Tristan Daley, and Zain Silcott- Duberry.

The Montserrat Football Team will left island today accompanied by Tandica Hughes- General Secretary, MFA, George Dublin- Coach, Steadroy Meade – Logistics Officer, Ingrid Osborne – Chaperone, and William Richard – Physiotherapist.

According to a statement from the MFA, participating in the tournament will allow the young footballers the opportunity to play against their pairs within the region and experience their first real taste of competitive plaly.

The CFA U14 Tournament, will see six groups, each comprising of five teams, competing, using the Round Robin Format. Each team will have an opportunity to play one match against the other teams within the same group.

CFA has appointed Patrick Beckles of Barbados as the Project Manager for both the boys U14 and CFA women’s tournaments. Beckles is working closely with Ms. Latoya DaCosta, Senior Manager of Competitions and Events for CONCACAF.

Each Participating Member Association, is responsible for covering the cost of travel to the tournament, while CFA will provide accommodation, ground transportation and meals for all teams and officials.

President of MFA, Vincent Cassell, believes, that this U14 tournament will allow the association to assess its youth development programme and see how it can be tweaked and improved, to better cater to the needs of Montserrat’s young players. “MFA is certain, that after this tournament, Montserrat will be in a better position to evaluate its ability to compete in upcoming international football competitions, since it is expected that the coach and players will have a chance to identify any possible weak areas, highlighted during the matches.”

“Montserrat Football Association has been preparing its youth for these events through its robust Youth Development Programme. The programme comprises of two groups: the Grass Root Group, which includes both boys and girls ages seven to 12 and the Elites Group, which covers children over the age of 12.

“Outside of the regular practice times, which are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday for the Grass Roots and Tuesday, Thursday, Friday for the Elites, these football enthusiasts are able to utilize the mini football fields in Salem and Lookout to further enhance their skills.

“Parents of selected players, have indicated their pleasure in the opportunities afforded by MFA, in not just providing a consistent, reliable local after school football program for their children, but in giving them a chance at experiencing a regional competition.”

The Boys U14 Tournament will take place at the St. Kitts Warner Park Sporting Complex and Montserrat is expected to play its first match against Dominica on Saturday August 4, at 2pm.
