The Honourable Dr. Hubert Minnis, Prime Minister of Bahamas, welcomed a delegation from the CARICOM High Level Mission on the steps of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) office on Thursday morning. Delegates, which include Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, Prime Minister Alan Chastanet of St. Lucia, and the CARICOM Secretary General Ambassador Irwin Laroque and representatives from CDEMA, the CDB and the Regional Security System (RSS) convened to discuss the extent of the destruction in the northern Bahamian islands following the passage of Hurricane Dorian earlier this week.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda Gaston Browne, who took over leadership of the OECS Heads this week, announced today that the independent ember states have agreed to provide US$100,000 to the Bahamas at this time of great need. “Although it is acknowledged that the sum is small compared to the damage caused by the Hurricane Dorian, the gesture is intended to let the Bahamian people know that the people of the Eastern Caribbean feel their pain,” the Cabinet statement posted to social media read.

Hurricane Dorian began impacting The Commonwealth of Bahamas on Sunday, September 1, 2019 making landfall at Elbow Cay, Abacos Islands at approximately 12:40 p.m. It went on to wreak unprecedented devastation across the Abacos Islands and Grand Bahamas. Prime Minister Minnis has placed the death toll from the catastrophic storm at 20, adding that the number is expected to climb as emergency teams make their way through the devastated islands.
