The Government of Montserrat says it has plans to invest in improving the annual carnival and leverage the natural synergies between culture and tourism.
So said Parliamentary Secretary of Tourism, Culture, and Diaspora Affairs, Crenston Buffonge in his remarks at the Opening of Carnival 2024 on Saturday, December 14 at Carnival City, Little Bay.
Mr. Buffonge, who was the former minister of agriculture under the previous MCAP administration, took on the role as parliamentary secretary in the United Alliance-led government.
“Carnival is more than a celebration—it’s a reflection of who we are as a people. From our traditions of masquerades, jumbie dance, and mocko jumbie to the vibrant artistry of calypso, soca, and pageantry-Montserrat Carnival represents the best of our heritage and creativity. It is this rich and unique culture that sets us apart and makes Montserrat so very special.
“As we celebrate our year end Carnival, we are also mindful of the opportunities it presents to connect with the world through tourism. This year, our island is welcoming a vibrant cruise season, with visitors eager to experience the unique blend of hospitality and culture that Montserrat offers. These visitors want more than just a tour—they want to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and stories that define our island,” the parliamentary secretary stated.
“To ensure we deliver this experience, we must synchronise our cultural celebrations with our tourism efforts. Events like our Carnival and other festivals … are a gateway for visitors to discover the soul of Montserrat. By aligning the talents of our people with the strengths of our hospitality industry, we can create an experience that delights both visitors and locals alike.
“This is the synergy I wish to strengthen – to ensure our reputation as a tourist destination, contributes to the preservation and growth of our culture,” Buffonge continued.
The government official invited Kenneth “Rabo” Silcott, Director of the Montserrat Arts Council to send his list of needs to Premier Reuben T. Meade.
The parliamentary secretary said they are taking steps to enhance carnival for the years ahead by reinstating the carnival committee, establishing a permanent home for carnival and improving the equipment and staging, starting with the widescreen display which is being used this year as backdrop.
“These initiatives are about more than improving carnival—they are about creating a lasting legacy for our culture and ensuring that both locals and visitors experience Montserrat at its finest,” he added.
The government representative told the queen show contestants, Calypso and Soca competitors, and every performer taking the stage “this is your moment to shine. Your talent is the heartbeat of our Carnival and a source of pride for us all.” He also welcomed home returning Montserratians and visitors.
“Let me express my heartfelt thanks to the organisers, stage management crew, including sound and lights and of course, the Montserrat Arts Council and its sponsors who are at the heart of our Carnival. We could not do this without you, year after year. As we celebrate this season together, let us honour the spirit of Carnival: attend the shows, support your favourite calypsonians, soca artists and queen contestants, have fun on road, jump up, but most of all be safe and enjoy. Let us make this Carnival a true testament to the best of Montserrat,” his remarks ended.
Along with declaring the carnival open, the parliamentary secretary’s duties during the opening ceremony, included sashing the six young women competing in the Miss Montserrat pageant in two weeks.
