The 2024 Calypso Finals could see a new monarch wearing the crown, if Kimari “Proklaima” Kirnon continues to impress the local judges as he has been doing all season.
The young Kirnon, hopes to follow in the footstep of his dad, Andy “King Andy” Kirnon, and capture the crown on Sunday, December 29. But first, he must overcome the reigning monarch Garnett “Sylk” Thompson.
The young calypsonian performed for several years in the Junior Calypso competition, before making his transition to the big stage in 2021. Kirnon topped the leaderboard for the first two rounds of the 2024 competitions – Calypso Eliminations and the Semi-Finals, amassing a total score of 764 points.
The top nine and their scores were:
Proklaima – 764
Dardo – 730
Bimsha – 704
Maggie D – 700
Daughter of the Soil – 692
Destiny – 684
Yogi Laser – 671
Ozzie Blue – 628
King Nattie Negus – 594
Now, Proklaima and the other competitors must again start at zero as each calypsonian will sing their two songs in the Finals hoping to wrestle the crown from Garnett “Sylk” Thompson.
Sylk has won the local calypso monarch crown three times. He will be performing last in both rounds in this weekend’s calypso showdown for the local crown.
