Montserratian dentist Dr Coretta Fergus has been recognised for her leadership in advancing the work of the International College of Dentists (ICD) across the English-speaking Caribbean, during a historic regional convocation held in Jamaica.
Fergus, who works with the Government of Montserrat and also operates her private practice, Regal Dental, is Regent for the English-Speaking Caribbean, Section XX, Region 32 of the International College of Dentists.
She led the ICD Convocation and Induction Ceremony in May Pen, Jamaica, which welcomed 22 dental professionals from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago as new Fellows of the organisation.
The ceremony coincided with Jamaica’s Emancipation Day celebrations and recognised the professional achievements, leadership and service of the new Fellows to dentistry and their communities.
Founded in 1920, the International College of Dentists is one of the world’s oldest honorary dental organisations. Fellowship is by invitation and recognises dentists who have demonstrated professional accomplishment, leadership, integrity and service to the profession and society.
In her welcome to the new Fellows, Fergus spoke about the different “seasons” of a professional journey, including preparation, sacrifice, perseverance and recognition.
She encouraged the inductees to see the convocation as “their season”, when years of service, often undertaken without public recognition, were being acknowledged by their professional peers.
The ceremony also marked a first for the English-speaking Caribbean with the attendance of ICD Global President Dr Julio Rodriguez. It was the first time a sitting global president of the organisation participated in an induction ceremony for the region.
Rodriguez delivered the keynote address and presented Fellowship certificates to the inductees.
Three Honorary Fellowships were also conferred during the ceremony. Mayor of May Pen Joel Williams, Dr Delroy Fray and Dr Dagago Pepple were recognised for contributions spanning civic leadership, healthcare, education and national development.
Among the invited guests were Professor Jon Suzuki of Temple University and former University of the West Indies Registrar William Iton.
Fergus was herself honoured during the ceremony when Rodriguez presented her with an ICD Citation Award.
The award recognised her leadership in strengthening the organisation throughout the English-speaking Caribbean, including her work organising the induction of new Fellows and advancing the ICD’s mission across the region.
The 2026 convocation highlighted the continued expansion of the International College of Dentists in the Caribbean and its efforts to promote professional leadership, development and collaboration among dental professionals.
The newly inducted Fellows are expected to contribute to advancing oral health, mentoring future dentists and strengthening service within their respective countries and communities.
