Grade six student Khayla West wrote herself into history just as she said she would on Sunday, March 5 at the annual St Augustine Primary School Reading and Public Speaking Competition.
In her three minutes and forty nine second presentation called Ways to Learn About History, she showed the importance of radio, newspaper and storytelling to preserving Montserrat’s history of living with a volcano. She ended with a confident statement that she would make history as repeating as the Best Speaker in her grade, which she did.
Second place was Jaena Golden with her presentation on What Are We Really Learning in School, Sharyn White was third with When You Are Old Enough to Vote, Will You?

Grade 2: Chidera Madu (winner); Joshua Kelsick (2nd); and Jelani Williams (3rd)
Grade 3: Alana Kassie (winner); Shekinah Persaud (2nd); and Kai Gray (3rd)
Grade 4: Pharri-Ann Senior (winner); Gerron Simpson (2nd) and Dahlia Silcott-Castro (3rd)
Grade 5: Jordon Edgecombe (winner); Mesoma Madu (2nd) and Sheldon James (3rd)
Kindergarten readers were Kianna Kelly, Shakayla Turton, and Ahaana Valechha
Most Improved Reader was Deangelo Samuels. Jonique Prince and Vashirn Roache were also recognised for their reading.
This was the fourth year for the competition which aims to help students build confidence in reading and writing presentations for public speaking.
