Montserrat Defence Force Officer Participates in All Arms Drill Instructor Course

The Royal Montserrat Defence Force (RMDF) is proud to announce that Lance Corporal James Cabey recently returned from a six-week training course held at the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATUB) in Belize.

The course ran from 3 June 2019 to 12 July 2019 at the Price Barracks, Ladyville, Belize. Mr. Cabey attended an All Arms Drill Instructor Training Course with other military personnel from different branches within the Belize Defence Force, the Jamaica Defence Force and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Cabey’s attendance was made possible through the support of the British Defence Attaché to the Caribbean and his office based in Jamaica. The course had 29 participants, including Cabey from Montserrat, two from Jamaica, and two from Cayman Islands with the remainder from Belize.

The All Arms Drill Instructor’s Course was designed to train soldiers in the art of teaching the various forms of drills to soldiers at all levels. The course covered the teaching of normal foot drills, rifle drills, cane drills, pace stick drills, Colour Party drills, Sword drills, Guard of Honour drills and Full Military Funeral drills. The course is geared towards Senior Non-Commissioned Officers to foster the increased development of their leadership as well as to plan and execute lesson plans for the process of teaching drills.
Similarly, it would greatly improve the interpersonal and communication skills of the participants to allow for the growth and development of them so that they can continue to be contributors to their home Units. Drills are a core part of military doctrine as when a soldier is drilled to respond a particular way when a situation arises their response would become second nature. A drill instructor is an important member of the training unit of any disciplinary unit as they are responsible along with other training staff for shaping the direction of young soldiers
becoming part of the organization as well as refreshing the skills of longstanding members ahead of major ceremonial events. This training opportunity would greatly increase the training capabilities of the RMDF as it would supplement the training unit of the Force.
Commanding Officer Major Alvin Ryan is very happy at the results of the training opportunity that has been afforded to the Force. He is pleased at the accomplishments of Lance Corporal Cabey and is confident that the recently completed training course would be highly beneficial to the Force and the country of Montserrat on a whole. In addition, he is extremely grateful to the British Defence Attaché Lt. Col. Anton Gash for the work he and his office has done in allowing the RMDF to be a part of this and other training opportunities during his tenure in office.
