Atlantic Rower Raising Funds for Montserrat Children’s Society

On December 1, Ian Tyers began a challenging 3,000 nautical mile row across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Roxy Atlantic Row. The journey will raise funds for the Montserrat Children’s Society, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting children in Montserrat with urgent health, educational, and social needs. The charity also aims to remove barriers for children with disabilities requiring specialised aid.

Tyers said in his crowdfunding campaign, that the rowing expedition will span 43 to 45 days from Tenerife to Antigua. He and a crew of 10 will rotate shifts, rowing three hours on and resting three hours off in an intense test of physical and mental endurance. Each participant will survive on five daily ration packs and burn approximately 1.5 stones in weight during the crossing. Notably, Ian Tyers has humorously volunteered to clean the underside of the boat during the journey.

The 60-year-old Englishman, said he wants to raise £3,000 for children’s charity, equivalent to £1 for each mile of the race. The online campaign has already raised £2,380, 79% of the goal.

“During my time working there, I had the privilege of meeting the dedicated individuals supporting the Montserrat Children’s Society, which aids vulnerable children with urgent health, social or educational needs,” Tyer wrote on his crowdfunding page. “The society works tirelessly to secure the well-being of children in Montserrat and protect them from all forms of harm.”

The Montserrat Children’s Society, founded in 2013, plays a vital role in bridging gaps in support for children that governmental provisions cannot fully address. The organisation focuses on providing a safe and healthy environment for children to thrive. It conducts various initiatives, including summer daycare schemes, work placement programmes for vulnerable youth, and direct assistance to families in need. Funding for its projects is generated through fundraising events, sponsorships, and community support.
