Former Minister of Agriculture Crenston Buffonge Takes on Parliamentary Secretary Role in New Government

Former Minister of Agriculture Crenston Buffonge, who garnered the most votes in the 2024 General Elections in October, has accepted a position in the new government.

Buffonge was the only member of the previous Movement of Change and Prosperity (MCAP) government to retain their seat in the elections. He was sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Premier by Governor Sarah Tucker on November 6.

In a published statement, the new Parliamentary Secretary said “Following the clear mandate delivered by the people of Montserrat in the October 24th elections and subsequent discussions, I have accepted the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Office of the Premier, as offered by the Honourable Premier Rueben T. Meade, leader of the United Alliance government. This decision comes after thorough consultations with stakeholders, including supporters, the Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) party leadership, and my closest advisors.

“The overwhelming support and trust placed in me by the people of Montserrat is both humbling and a sacred responsibility that I do not take lightly. This appointment represents a significant opportunity to serve our beloved island from within the governmental structure, strengthening my resolve to work with unwavering dedication and integrity for the benefit of all Montserratians.

“In this role, I will work closely with the Premier’s Office to advance key development initiatives in Tourism, Culture, Diaspora Affairs, and more, while maintaining my independent voice in Parliament. This position enables me to directly contribute to policy development and implementation, ensuring that the interests of all my constituents are effectively represented at the highest levels of government.

“While I maintain my relationship with MCAP, this appointment reflects the broader mandate for collaborative governance that the people of Montserrat have clearly demonstrated. This new role provides a unique opportunity to build bridges and work together for the collective good of our island nation, transcending traditional party lines while upholding the principles and values that earned your trust.
My track record over the past five years speaks to my dedication to serving the people of Montserrat, regardless of political affiliation. As Parliamentary Secretary, I will now have an enhanced capacity to advocate for and deliver on the priorities that matter most to our communities, contributing more effectively to our island’s development and prosperity.

“As we move forward, I remain committed to the principles that have defined my leadership: leading by example, staying connected with the people and always putting the collective interest of Montserrat first. My pledge is to continue serving with the same humility, approachability and steadfast dedication that has characterised my public service. Together, I am confident that we will work collaboratively to build a stronger, more prosperous Montserrat,” the statement read.
