When the Montserrat senior men’s team meet the Dominican Republic team on Saturday afternoon on the Blake’s Football field, it will be the first time both will play each other in 19 years.
The teams previously met in March 2000 with Dom Rep the victor in both games. It is all fresh blood on both sides and Montserrat’s team, captained by Lyle Taylor is prepared to bring a different ending to this encounter.
Taylor said he was expecting it to be a tough game but believes they can pull it off if they work hard for each other and get the right result.
“The team is in a good place. We spent the last year working very very hard to get to the position we’re in and the story isn’t finished yet. The next six games will tell us where we are. We are about four players about being the best in the Caribbean,” Taylor told the local media Friday.
The Dom Rep team comprises 80% homegrown talent with a few additional players from the United States and Spain. Manager Jorge Bauger said their priority has been to build up the local pool of players.
“We’re prepared for the match,” the manager said. They did this by taking on the higher ranked Guatemala and United Emirates. Despite losing both games, Bauger feels it was a great work out to take on Montserrat, which primarily fields UK-based players with local roots.
The teams have only faced-off twice and the Dominican Republic won both games at FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The last time they met was on March 19, 2000, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, for the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup win 3-1 in favor of the Dominican Republic.
The last time they met in the Dominican Republic, was on March 5, 2000 in San Cristobal, a 3-0 victory for the Dominicans.
Game time is Saturday at 3PM. Gates open at 1:30PM. Tickets can be purchased at the gate.
