BLAKE’S ESTATE – More than 40 girls and women participated in the Girls/Women Football Festival hosted by the Montserrat Football Association (MFA) on Saturday, May 23, 2015.
Vincent Cassell, MFA President said he was somewhat disappointed at the turnout. However, there were two church camps being held over the weekend, which would have contributed to the low numbers.
Boys from the elite squad and the national women’s team assisted at the eight stations set up around the field. Each group divided by age rotated around the field for the three-hour event to learn about football.
Hon. Minister of Sports Delmaude Ryan said she was happy for the event and enjoyed being with the other women who learned about the different techniques involved in the sport.
“It was very exciting to see so many young girls being exposed to football. Also the group of women I was with got a really good workout as we learned the various techniques of the game,” Minister Ryan said. “I am very happy that the MFA and CONCACAF hosted this event to promote the sport for women and it is good to know that we too can excel in the game of football.”
At the close of the event, Minister Ryan presented a ball and T-shirt to each participant.
The festival was part of CONCACAF’s Women’s Football Day. Football clubs within the federation’s network were encouraged to host the open day which took place exactly two weeks before the opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
