Montserrat loses former legislator Noel ‘Dadda’ Tuitt at 74

BRADES, Montserrat – Another former legislator on Montserrat has died. Noel ‘Dadda’ Tuitt passed away on Monday, January 10 at the Golden Year’s Home on Montserrat. He was 74.

Mr. Tuitt was one of seven members of the peoples Liberation Movement that swept to power in 1978 claiming all seven seats at stake in the Legislative Council elections. He represented the Windward District that included Long Ground for eighteen years in Parliament.

According to records from the Clerk of Councils, Mr. Tuitt was first elected in 1978 as part of the Dr. John A. Osborne Government. He subsequently won three consecutive elections and served two terms as Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Lands & Housing from 1983 to 1991.

He again won his seat in the 1991 Elections but became a member of the Opposition. He joined the Reuben Meade lead Government in 1994 and became the Minister for Communications & Works.

Mr. Tuitt quit active politics in 1996 after losing his seat and moved to the United Kingdom. He returned to Montserrat in 2009.

A funeral date for the former legislator has not yet been confirmed.
