BRADES – Preparations have begun for the annual fundraiser to help women of Montserrat get mammograms.
Organiser Sonia Charles told Discover Montserrat that she’s anticipating this year’s events and the support that community gives, which has enabled about 200 women on island to get the free breast screenings.
Charles began the annual breast cancer awareness forum in 2009 as a way to encourage women and the community at large to speak more knowledgeably about women’s health issues and to encourage proactive screenings for cancer.
Since then, a group of women have teamed up to create the Pink Ribbon Charity which spearheads the drive to raise funds to pay for mammograms for women. The Ministry of Communications & Works has also been a valued partner providing reduced fees on the ferry so that women can travel to Antigua for the screenings.
This year’s activities will include the Pink Ribbon Charity Dinner on Wednesday, October 28th at Olveston House. Cost is EC$75.00. On Thursday October 29th, the Breast Cancer Awareness Forum/Information Evening will be held. The venue is to be determined.
On Saturday October 31st there will be the cake and breakfast sale and in the evening, the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk will be held.
Volunteers are needed to support all of the events. Tickets for the charity dinner are available from Nurse Brenda Daley and Hazel Riley along with other members of the organisation.
