Enver Browne and Jaeda Emmanuel lead Montserrat’s debating team going up against St. Maarten, in tonight’s opening session of the 47th Annual Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC) in Antigua.

The competition, which was founded in 1972 by the late Dr. George Irish rotates annually among the Leeward Islands. Competing in this edition slated from February 28th to March 3rd are Antigua, Montserrat, Nevis, St Kitts, and St Maarten.

Team Montserrat will be on the opposing side of the moot “Emphasis on environmental conservation retards the capacity of developing nations to compete in the global economy.” The third member of the Montserrat debating team is Delroy Joseph.

The final is set for Sunday March 3rd with the topic “Countries have not done enough to afford the LGBTQ community the same legal rights and protections as other citizens.”

Montserrat has won eight times since the competition’s inception, with the last time being in 2014 at home.
The debate will be aired live on the local radio station ZJB and also streamed live on ABS Television.
