MVO wants images of 11 February 2010 dome collapse

BRADES – Director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, Dr. Paul Cole is requesting the public’s assistance in compiling photos of last month’s collapse.

A statement from the MVO reads as follows:
MVO would like to collect as many digital photographs as possible of the activity during the partial dome collapse of the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, that occurred between about 11:50 am and 2 pm on 11 February 2010.
These will be used to compile a time-stamped reference collection that can be used by MVO Staff to help interpret data from the event.

All of your photographs might be useful, even those that you would normally delete.

It is very important to know, as accurately as possible, the times when the photographs were taken.

If you wish to submit photographs, please do the following:

  • Copy all the photographs taken on the same camera to a single directory on your computer. If this is not possible due to duplicate file names, use multiple directories.
  • Using the same camera, take a photograph of your computer screen displaying the following web page, as soon as it is loaded: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx.
  • Note the time given on the web page.
  • Copy this photograph to the directory.
  • Provide MVO with a copy of this directory, and the time you noted. If possible, identify where the photographs were taken from.
  • You can do this through any MVO staff member. Alternatively, compress the directory to a single zip file and send it to rod.stewart@uwiseismic.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it using a service like www.yousendit.com.

Please note that submitting your photographs for this project involves no transfer of copyright. MVO will not use your photographs for any other purpose without first contacting you for your permission. If you wish, you can give MVO permission to use the photographs for “non-commercial purposes” when you submit them.

Please contact Rod Stewart ( rod.stewart@uwiseismic.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you have any questions.”
