Road works in Salem.

The Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) Montserrat under Grant Agreement GA23/MOT financed by the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Montserrat in collaboration with the Montserrat Utilities Ltd MUL, as implementing Agency are managing a sub-project to replace water mains in the Salem Centre area.
The current water mains in Salem were installed in the early 70s and have outlived their expected life span.
Some have begun to leak and have created faults in the water system such as decreased water flow. The mains were placed so as to achieve the shortest distance to a household connection but have become a problem as homeowners further developed their properties, with other outcomes such as mains leaking and flooding out yards and gardens and also impacting on the ease of MUL to effect repairs.
The Sub-project will replace the existing water mains with 1.23 km of High Density Polyethylene (HDPP) Pipes which have an estimated life span of 50 years. Installations will include along the Salem Main road and this will cause minor disruptions to traffic flow. The estimated cost of this sub-project is in the amount of $260,610.00 Eastern Caribbean dollars. The project is 75% completed.
Under the BNTF 9 cycle geared towards the reduction of poverty in poor and vulnerable communities, the sectors of focus are Education and Human Resource Development; Basic Community Access and Drainage Improvement; and Water and Sanitation Systems Enhancement.
