More than 200 women have been able to receive mammogram tests through the fund since 2009. The initiative was the brainchild of sonographer Sonia Charles through her company CaribScan. It later evolved into the Pink Ribbon Charity in 2014.
In March 2019, Charles was received an Order of Distinction for her contributions to medicine and women’s health on island.
This year, Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities begin on Sunday October 20 with a church service at the St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Lookout.
On Wednesday October 23 there will be a breast health check clinic in the Governor’s Office Car Park from noon to 3PM. Breast health will also be the subject of the Talking Health programme which airs on ZJB Radio at 3PM that same day. In the evening, the popular Charity Barbecue will be held at Olveston House.
On Friday October 25, there will be a Charity Bingo Night at the Little Bay Market.
Saturday October 26 will be an early morning breakfast at Good Eats Restaurant in Brades from 6AM. In the evening, the Pink Ribbon Walk begins in Lookout at 6PM and ends at Good Eats.
A Celebration & Awards Night will be held on Sunday October 27 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. Funds raised from the various events support the Mammogram Fund. Tickets are available at Economy Bakery and Susan Edgecombe at Tradewinds and Olveston house.
A Breast Care & Bra Fitting Party hosted by Nerissa Golden, will feature Peridot Webster of Trinidad and Ms Charles on Wednesday October 30 at Tropical Mansion Suites. The event will be an inspirational evening starting at 6PM. It will provide women the opportunity to be fitted for bras and to discuss breast care in all stages of life.
